Wear the Art: Matching a Tee, a Pin and a Keychain

Most of what Kiyo Arts makes is for walls. But a good piece of artwork isn't limited to a rectangle above a sofa. Many of our designs also come as graphic tees, button pins and acrylic keychains, which means you can carry a piece you like out of the house with you.

Done well, a tee with a matching pin or keychain looks considered. Done badly, it looks like a uniform. The difference is in how much you match and where you put it.

The three pieces

  • Graphic tees. Soft ring-spun cotton, unisex classic fit, sizes XS to 5XL, in black or white depending on the design. The artwork is printed large on the front.
  • Button pins. Glossy metal buttons with a safety-pin back, in 1.25, 2.25 and 3 inch sizes.
  • Acrylic keychains. Printed on both sides of clear acrylic, in three sizes, on a split ring.

The principle: one big, one small

Pick one item to be the main event and let the others be details. The tee is the obvious lead, because it is the largest. A pin or a keychain in a related design is the echo.

What doesn't work is three large, loud things at once: a busy tee, a 3-inch button on the chest and a big charm swinging from a belt loop. Scale the supporting pieces down.

Three ways to match

1. The same design, different places

The tee carries the artwork on your chest. The same design, small, goes somewhere away from it: on your bag strap, your keys, your jacket collar. Because the two are apart, it reads as a signature and not a repeat.

Rule: don't pin the same design directly onto the tee that already shows it. Put it on the bag or the jacket instead.

2. The same world, different designs

More interesting. The tee shows one piece and the accessories show others from the same family: all space, all city, all creatures. The eye sees a theme without seeing a duplicate.

3. The same colours

The loosest and often the most stylish. The pin and keychain pick up one or two colours from the tee, whatever their subject.

Combinations that work

Neon city

Three views of the same kind of street. Wear with dark jeans and a plain jacket.

Koi Attack as a tee. Let the shirt lead, and keep the accessories small.

Space

The astronaut, the planet and the nebula. A set that tells a small story.

Glitch

The reverse of the set above. Both designs share the red and blue interference effect, so they match without repeating.

Dark

Skull and crow, both in cold blue. Wear with black.

Monochrome

Black and white throughout. The easiest set to dress up.

Where to put each piece

  • The pin: on a jacket collar or chest, a bag strap, a tote, a hat or a lanyard. Not on the tee itself. Thin jersey sags under a pin and keeps the hole. See how to style pins.
  • The keychain: on a bag, a belt loop, a zip or your keys. See bag charm stacking.
  • Keep them apart. Tee on the body, pin on the outer layer, keychain on the bag. Three points, spread out.

The rest of the outfit

Plain. Solid colours, no other prints, no competing logos. Black, grey, denim, white. Take one colour from the artwork and repeat it once if you like, in a cap or the laces. See how to style an art graphic tee.

Sizes

  • Pins: 1.25 inch for a collar or strap. 2.25 inch for a bag. Keep the 3 inch for a bag panel or a board. See button pin sizes explained.
  • Keychains: the smaller sizes for keys and zips, the largest for a bag.
  • Tees: your usual size for a regular fit, one or two up for an oversized look. Tees are made to order and can't be exchanged, so check the size chart.

From wall to wardrobe

If the same artwork is on your wall or your desk, a pin or a keychain is a way of taking it with you. For anyone who streams or records, a tee that matches the art behind you ties the whole frame together. See gifts for a streamer.

As a gift

A tee with a matching pin or keychain makes a complete present for about $40 to $50, and it looks more thought-out than either alone. For a convention-goer, add two or three pins. See pins and lanyards for conventions.

Care

Wash tees inside out in cold water and dry on low. Take pins off before washing. Wipe keychains with a soft damp cloth. See how to wash a graphic tee and acrylic keychain care.
