Gifts for a Streamer: Art That Looks Good on Camera

For someone who streams, records videos or spends their evenings on camera with friends, their room is a set. The wall behind their chair is in every frame. So is whatever they are wearing. A viewer forms an impression of a channel in the first few seconds, and much of that comes from the background.

That makes a streamer one of the easier people to buy for. They need things that look good on camera, and they will use them on day one. Here is what to give and how to choose.

What a camera sees

A webcam frame usually shows the person from the chest up, and a slice of the wall behind them. Sometimes a second camera shows the desk and hands. That gives three places a gift can appear.

  1. The background wall. The biggest area in the frame after the person.
  2. What they wear. The chest and shoulders are front and centre.
  3. The desk, if they use an overhead or wide shot.

For the background: a tapestry

A blank wall behind a streamer looks unfinished. A messy shelf looks worse. A large tapestry fixes both in one go. It covers a wide area, hangs from removable hooks, costs far less than a canvas of the same size, and comes down in a minute.

What works on camera:

  • Dark, with colour. A dark background makes the person stand out, and a webcam handles it well. Very pale backgrounds can cause the camera to underexpose a face.
  • Bold, simple shapes. Fine detail turns to mush at webcam resolution and after video compression. Large forms read clearly.
  • Not too busy behind the head. A calm area in the middle, with the interest at the edges, keeps attention on the face.
  • Colours that match their lighting. Most streamers light their rooms in purple, pink, blue or cyan.

Purple Pink Wormhole ticks every box: a bold spiral of purple and pink on black. CRT Lion Retro Wave is a lion in pale violet on pure black, striking and simple. Cyber Wave Escape is a teal grid running to the horizon, for a cyan-lit room.

For size, 68 × 80 inches covers the wall behind most desks. If you are unsure, 50 × 60 is the safer choice. See the tapestry size guide.

For the background: canvas or posters

If they already have a setup they like, one or two pieces of wall art in frame add character without replacing anything.

  • Canvas is the best format for a streamer. It has no glass, so it doesn't reflect key lights, ring lights or monitors. A glazed frame behind a streamer shows a bright white glare on camera.
  • Matte posters work for the same reason.
  • Placement: over one shoulder, in the upper part of the frame, where it is visible beside their head.

For the desk: a mat

A full-size desk mat, 31.5 × 15.5 inches, is the gift a streamer will use every single day. It gives a consistent mouse surface, quiets the keyboard on a sensitive microphone, and looks good in a desk-cam shot. Dark designs hide wear. The Purple Pink Wormhole mat matches the tapestry above for a coordinated set. Browse the desk mats collection.

To wear: a graphic tee

What a streamer wears is in the middle of the picture for hours. A tee with a strong print is on-screen branding.

  • Black tees look best on camera. White can blow out under bright lights.
  • A bold central graphic reads better than small detail.
  • Check the size. Tees are made to order and can't be exchanged. Ask someone who knows, or ask them directly.

Small gifts

  • Pins for a jacket, a bag or a board in the background, at about $6 each.
  • A keychain for about $15.

These suit a friend, a community member or a Secret Santa. See Secret Santa gifts under $20.

How to choose the design

  1. Watch a stream. What colour is their lighting? That is your palette.
  2. Look at what is already on the wall. Add to it. Don't fight it.
  3. Think about what they play or make. Sci-fi and shooters suit neon cities. Cosy games suit softer, calmer pieces. Horror suits dark and gothic.
  4. When in doubt, match the lighting colour and choose something dark and bold.

One caution: avoid artwork of characters or logos from games, films or brands. Streamers have to be careful about what appears on screen, and original art carries no such worry.

By budget

Approximate prices at the time of writing.

  • Under $20: pins or a keychain.
  • $25 to $45: a tee, a full-size desk mat or a 50 × 60 tapestry.

  • $90 and up: a tapestry and matching desk mat, or a canvas.
