A graphic tee does most of the work of an outfit on its own. That is the point of it. The mistake people make is asking it to share the stage: a loud print with patterned trousers, a busy jacket and three accessories all competing. The art gets lost. Style a graphic tee well and the print becomes the one thing people remember.
Kiyo Arts tees carry the same original artwork as our wall pieces, printed on soft ring-spun cotton in a unisex classic fit, in black or white. Here is how to wear one.
The one rule
One loud thing per outfit. If the tee has a detailed, colourful print, everything else should be plain. Solid colours, simple shapes, minimal logos. Think of the rest of the outfit as the wall and the tee as the picture.
1. The default: tee, dark jeans, clean trainers
This works for almost everyone and almost everywhere. A black tee with a vivid print, dark or black jeans, and white or black trainers. Nothing else is needed. If the print has one standout colour, such as the cyan in a neon city scene, you can repeat it once in a small way, with a cap or the laces, and stop there.
2. Layered under an open shirt
Wear the tee under an unbuttoned overshirt, flannel or lightweight jacket in a solid colour. The open front frames the print like a picture frame. This is the best approach for cooler weather and for anyone who finds a graphic tee too casual on its own. Choose an outer layer in a colour that appears in the print, or in a neutral such as black, olive, grey or denim.
3. Under a jacket
A denim jacket, a bomber or a leather jacket over a graphic tee is a classic. Only the centre of the print shows, which suits designs with a strong central subject: a skull, an astronaut, an animal. The jacket is also the natural place for a button pin in a matching design.
4. Oversized, with slim or straight bottoms
Sizing up one or two sizes gives a relaxed, streetwear shape, and a larger tee shows off a large print. Balance it with something narrower on the bottom half, such as straight-leg jeans, cargo trousers that taper, or shorts that end above the knee. Oversized on top and oversized below can swamp a smaller frame. Our tees run from XS to 5XL, so there is room to size up.
5. Tucked in, with a belt
A front tuck or a full tuck into high-waisted jeans or trousers sharpens the whole look and makes a tee feel deliberate. It suits the white tees especially. Check where the print sits first. If the artwork runs low on the shirt, a full tuck may hide the bottom of it, and a small front tuck is the better choice.

6. Smartened up
A graphic tee under an unstructured blazer, with dark trousers and plain leather trainers or boots, works for a creative office, a gallery opening or dinner. The trick is that everything else must be clean and well fitted, and the tee should be in good condition, with no fading or stretched collar. A black-and-white design, such as the Earth Glitched Retro Stamp tee or the Modern Angel tee, is the easiest to dress up.
7. At the desk, on camera
If you stream, record or spend your day on video calls, the tee is the only part of your outfit anyone sees. A print that matches your setup, the same artwork as the poster behind you or the mat on your desk, makes the whole frame look designed. Dark tees read better on camera than white ones, which can blow out under bright lights.
Black tee or white tee?
- Black makes neon and saturated colour glow, hides marks, and suits evening. It is the natural choice for cyberpunk, synthwave and cosmic prints.
- White feels lighter and fresher, suits daytime and summer, and works well with black-and-white or stamp-style designs.
If you are buying one, buy black. If you are buying two, get one of each.
Matching colours to the print
Pick out the one or two main colours in the artwork and use them, quietly, elsewhere.
- Orange and blue print (such as the Koi Attack tee): blue denim does the matching for you.
- Purple and pink print: black, grey or white bottoms. Avoid red or green.
- Blue flame or icy print (such as the Blue Flame Skull tee): black with a silver or steel accessory.
- Black-and-white print: anything, including one bright colour elsewhere.
Accessories: fewer than you think
A watch or a simple chain, and one small item that echoes the print. A keychain on a belt loop or a pin on a jacket in the same design is a neat touch that ties an outfit together without adding noise. Skip the scarf, the patterned bag and the statement hat on the same day.
Getting the fit right
These are unisex classic-fit tees, with a crew neck and a straight cut. For a regular fit, order your usual size. For a relaxed or oversized look, go up one or two. Clothing is made to order in the size you choose and can't be exchanged, so if you are between sizes, measure a tee you already like across the chest and compare it with the size chart on the product page.
Keeping the print looking new
How you wash a graphic tee decides how long the art lasts. Turn it inside out, wash cold, and tumble dry low or hang it to dry. Avoid ironing directly over the print. A tee looked after this way keeps its colour far longer than one thrown in a hot wash.
