Horizontal, Vertical, or Square: Choosing Your Canvas Orientation

Horizontal, Vertical, or Square: Choosing Your Canvas Orientation

People agonize over which image and then pick the shape by accident — whatever the default thumbnail showed. But orientation is what decides whether the piece fits the wall at all. Kiyo Arts canvases and posters are portrait-orientation; posters also come in square sizes, and tapestries come in both portrait and landscape. Here is how to work with that on purpose.

Match the piece to the wall shape

Wide, open wall (over a sofa, a bed, a long desk): a wide shape. That means two or three portrait canvases hung side by side, so the group follows the horizontal line of the furniture — or a single tapestry in landscape orientation.

Tall, narrow wall (between a door and a corner, beside a bookshelf, a stairwell): vertical. This is where a single portrait-orientation canvas is at its best: it fills vertical space that a wide piece would leave as dead air above and below.

Compact or awkward wall (a small entry, a nook, between two windows): a small portrait canvas, or a square poster in a frame. A square is the most flexible shape for a wall that isn’t clearly wide or tall, and squares group cleanly in pairs and grids.

A portrait canvas suits a tall wall; two or three side by side follow the line of a sofa or a desk.

Match the piece to the furniture below it

The art should relate to whatever it hangs over. Over a wide, low sofa: a pair or trio of portrait canvases, with the whole group roughly two-thirds the sofa’s width, or a landscape tapestry. Over a narrow console or a chair: a single portrait canvas. Over a bed: a pair or trio centered on the headboard, or a tapestry. The art and the furniture should read as a pair, not two unrelated rectangles.

Match the format to the image

Some images have a natural direction. A towering figure, a canyon, a rocket, a city seen from street level — these are vertical by nature, and most Kiyo Arts pieces are composed that way. A sweeping horizon or a wide skyline is at its best wide; look for it as a tapestry, where landscape orientation is available. An abstract or a single centered object is happy square, as a poster. Check the product images to see how the composition sits in the format you are choosing.

A quick rule for groups

If you might add a second piece later, buy the first in a size you would be happy to repeat. Two or three portrait canvases of the same size, hung in a row with equal gaps, look deliberate. Mixed sizes in a row can look like a mistake.

What the room’s proportions are telling you

Look at the wall itself. Tall ceilings and a narrow wall between two doors want vertical — one portrait canvas, sized generously. A long, low wall behind a sofa wants a wide shape; a single small vertical piece there looks stranded in the middle of an ocean of paint, so hang a row of two or three, or use a landscape tapestry. When the wall is roughly as tall as it is wide — a chimney breast, a short entry wall, a bump-out — one large portrait canvas or a matching pair is almost always the answer.

A vertical canvas fills a tall, narrow wall that a wide piece would leave awkward.

Which shape comes in which product

Canvas: portrait, from 11 × 14 to 40 × 60 inches. Posters and framed posters: portrait, with square sizes for posters. Tapestries: portrait or landscape, from 26 × 36 to 88 × 104 inches. Desk mats are wide by nature. If a wall really needs one wide piece and you want canvas, a row of portrait canvases does the same job and is easier to hang level than it sounds — hang the middle one first and work outward.

Measure before you commit

Cut a piece of paper or tape a rectangle on the wall in the size and orientation you’re considering. Live with it for a day. It costs nothing and it’s the single best way to avoid ordering a beautiful canvas in the wrong shape. When you’re sure, the canvas collection lists the available sizes on each piece.
