Every era imagines the future differently, and each version leaves behind a look. Three of them are everywhere in art, fashion and room decor right now: cyberpunk, Y2K and Y3K. They all say future. They say it in completely different voices. Mix them up and a room looks confused. Pick one and it looks intentional.
The short version
- Cyberpunk is the future going wrong: dark, rainy, neon-lit, crowded.
- Y2K is the future as imagined around the year 2000: shiny, bubbly, optimistic.
- Y3K is the far future as imagined today: chrome, liquid, sleek and a little alien.
Cyberpunk: high tech, low life
Cyberpunk began in science fiction of the 1980s, in novels and films that pictured a near future of vast cities, powerful corporations and technology that had outrun the people using it. Its look draws heavily on night-time Tokyo and Hong Kong: dense streets, stacked signs, wet pavements.
How to spot it:
- Night. Almost always night, and often rain.
- Neon signs reflected in wet streets.
- Towering, crowded buildings, cables, alleyways.
- Magenta, cyan and electric blue against black. Sometimes acid green or orange.
- Grit: steam, grime, clutter.
The mood: tense, restless, atmospheric. It is beautiful and uneasy at once.
In our catalogue, Cyberpunk Slick Street is the clearest example, along with the Japanese City Punk series, such as Japanese City Punk FX.3. We covered the style in more depth in Cyberpunk Urbanism.

Y2K: the shiny millennium
Y2K is named for the year 2000. It describes the design of roughly 1997 to 2004, when the internet was new, mobile phones were getting small, and the future looked like fun. Technology was translucent and brightly coloured. Music videos were set on spaceships. After two decades out of fashion, it came back strongly in the 2020s, mostly through clothing and graphic design.
How to spot it:
- Shiny, glossy, bubbly surfaces. Inflated shapes and rounded corners.
- Translucent coloured plastic.
- Silver and metallics alongside baby blue, hot pink, lime and lilac.
- Stars, butterflies, flames, chunky rounded lettering.
- Early digital imagery: pixel icons, lens flares, simple 3D shapes.
The mood: playful, bright and optimistic. Y2K thinks the future will be a party.
Y2K overlaps with vaporwave, which also borrows from turn-of-the-century technology, but vaporwave is slower and more wistful. Our post on vaporwave vs synthwave vs outrun covers that side of the family.
Y3K: the year 3000
Y3K is a recent term for a look that imagines the far future, a thousand years on. Where Y2K is cute, Y3K is sleek. It keeps the metallics and drops the bubblegum.
How to spot it:
- Liquid chrome and mirror-like metal that looks poured.
- Smooth, organic, flowing forms mixed with sharp, aggressive geometry.
- A cool palette: silver, white, ice blue, black, with occasional iridescent shifts.
- Minimal backgrounds and lots of empty space.
- A clean, cold, almost clinical finish.
The mood: calm, detached and slightly uncanny. Y3K is less interested in people than the other two are.
Chrome and Blue and Liquid Metal Mist Pink are the Y3K pieces in our collection. There is more on the style in Y3K Hyperfuturism.

A quick test
- Is it a city at night? Cyberpunk.
- Is it shiny and cute? Y2K.
- Is it shiny and cold, with no people and a lot of space? Y3K.
Which suits your space?
- Gaming setup or media room: cyberpunk. The dark background and neon work with screens and RGB lighting, and the detail holds your attention.
- A teenager's bedroom or a playful creative space: Y2K. It is bright, friendly and doesn't take itself seriously.
- A minimal living room or a modern office: Y3K. One large, cool, abstract piece on a pale wall with space around it.
- A bedroom you want to sleep in: Y3K, or a calm cyberpunk piece with a distant skyline instead of a busy street.
Can they share a room?
Cyberpunk and Y3K can, with care, because both are cool-toned. Put the cyberpunk piece where you want energy, such as behind a desk, and the Y3K piece where you want calm. Y2K is harder to combine with either. Its pastels and playfulness sit awkwardly next to cyberpunk's grit. If you love both, give them separate walls or separate rooms.
Why these looks keep coming back
Each one answers a different feeling about technology. Cyberpunk expresses worry. Y2K expresses excitement. Y3K expresses curiosity about something beyond us. Most people feel all three at different times, which is why none of them really goes away. The one you want on your wall is the one that matches how you want the room to feel.
