Canvas Size Guide: How Big to Go Over a Couch, a Desk, or a Bed

If there is one near-universal wall-art mistake, it is buying too small. A canvas that looked substantial on screen shows up and hangs there like a stamp on an envelope. The fix is to size the piece to the furniture it hangs over, not to the whole wall and not to your gut.

The core ratio

For art over a piece of furniture, aim for roughly two-thirds to three-quarters the width of that furniture. Kiyo Arts canvases are portrait-orientation, so over wide furniture that width usually comes from two or three canvases hung side by side as one group.

  • Standard 3-seat sofa (about 84″ wide): about 55–65″ of art. Three 18 × 24 canvases, or two 30 × 40, with 3-inch gaps.
  • Loveseat or 2-seat sofa (about 60″): about 40–45″. One 40 × 60 canvas, or two 20 × 30 side by side.
  • Queen headboard (about 62″): about 40–48″. Two 20 × 30 canvases, or three 12 × 18.
  • King headboard (about 78″): about 52–58″. Three 16 × 20 or 16 × 24 canvases.
  • Desk (about 48–60″): about 30–40″. Two 16 × 20 canvases side by side, or a single 24 × 32 or 24 × 36 if you want the shelf space around it.
  • Console table (about 48″): a single canvas in the 24 × 30 to 24 × 36 range.

Height off the furniture

Leave roughly 8–10 inches between the top of the furniture and the bottom of the canvas. Closer than that and it looks like it’s resting on the couch; much farther and it floats free of the piece it’s supposed to relate to. On a bare wall with no furniture, hang so the center of the canvas is about 57–60 inches from the floor — gallery standard eye level.

When to go bigger than the ratio says

Cosmic and dark pieces read smaller than they measure, because so much of the frame is near-black — size those up. Rooms with tall ceilings (9 feet and up) can carry a larger piece without it dominating. And art meant to be the room’s only art can push toward the three-quarter mark rather than two-thirds.

When to go smaller

If you’re planning a pair or a trio, each piece is sized so the group hits the two-thirds width, not each individual canvas. And a genuinely small accent piece — beside a doorway, over a nightstand — is fine at 11 × 14 or 12 × 16; just don’t make it the main event on a big wall.

The eye-level rule, and when to ignore it

Gallery standard is to hang so the center of the piece sits about 57–60 inches from the floor — average standing eye level. That is the right default for a bare wall. But when a piece hangs over furniture, the furniture wins: relate the canvas to the sofa or headboard with that 8–10 inch gap, even if the center ends up a little higher than 60 inches. And in a room where you are almost always seated — a media room, a reading nook, a low-lounge living room — drop everything a few inches so it reads correctly from a chair.

Groups size as one shape

If you are hanging a pair or a trio, do not size each canvas to the two-thirds rule — size the whole arrangement, including the gaps, to two-thirds the width of the furniture below. Three 12 × 18 canvases with 3-inch gaps make a 42-inch block, which is right over a queen bed or a loveseat. Measuring each piece individually is how people end up with a group that is either lost on the wall or bursting past the edges of the couch.

A large piece with breathing room reads as intentional; a small one reads as leftover.

One wide piece instead

If you want a single wide piece over a sofa or a bed, look at a tapestry. Tapestries come in landscape orientation, and the 60 × 50 inch size sits well over a three-seat sofa or a queen bed.

Template it first

Cut newspaper or kraft paper to the exact size you’re considering and tape it to the wall for a day. It is the cheapest insurance in interior design and it will talk you out of the too-small option every time. Kiyo Arts lists the sizes on each piece in the canvas collection.
